According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, sleep apnea is a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. They often occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound.
Sleep apnea is usually a chronic (ongoing) condition that disrupts sleep 3 or more nights a week. You often move out of deep sleep and into light sleep when your breathing pauses or becomes shallow. This results in poor sleep quality that makes you tired during the day.
Sleep apnea often goes undiagnosed since your physician cannot detect the condition during routine office visits. Most people who have sleep apnea don't know they have it because it only occurs during sleep. A family member and/or bed partner may first notice the signs of sleep apnea. The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This most often means that the airway has collapsed or is blocked during sleep. The blockage may cause shallow breathing or breathing pauses.
When you try to breathe, any air that squeezes past the blockage can cause loud snoring. Obstructive sleep apnea happens more often in people who are overweight, but it can affect anyone.
Sleep apnea can:
Increase your risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity, and diabetes
Increase the risk for heart failure
Make irregular heartbeats more likely
Increase your chances of work-related or driving accidents
Kuhn Dental Associates offers a comfortable method to treat sleep apnea. Their treatment does not involve the use of a cumbersome CPAP, which many people simply cannot tolerate.
An attractive smile should look good and feel good. When teeth are in proper alignment, facial muscles and jaw joints function harmoniously. However, improperly aligned upper to lower teeth, or “malocclusion”, can contribute to facial pain, headaches, sore jaw joints, worn teeth as well as night-time clenching and grinding.
Neuromuscular dentistry establishes the overall bite position at an accurate level, which promotes good health and improved well-being. Dr. David Kuhn, Dr. Mandy Kuhn Grimshaw, and Dr. Ritt Kuhn have mastered the intricate aspects that combine smile appeal with joint health, TMJ Disorder symptoms, and muscle relaxation. They each have specific training in diagnosis with the aid of computerized jaw movement monitoring and the latest repositioning appliances.
At Kuhn Dental Associates, your care is overseen by doctors and staff who have completed advanced training in neuromuscular occlusion through the renowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies.
