Non-Surgical Periodontal Gum Treatment

Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, affects up to 80% of the population, and it’s the leading cause of adult tooth loss in the US. Furthermore, gum disease is closely linked to an increased risk for developing heart and respiratory problems, diabetes complications, Alzheimer’s disease, and a number of other whole-health problems. With minimally invasive, non-surgical gum disease therapy, our dental hygienists can return your mouth to a healthy state, then help you maintain optimal oral health for life. We use a soft tissue laser for precision procedures and prompt healing.

Kuhn Dental Associates has been successfully treating periodontal (gum) disease for over 25 years. Our team of Registered Dental Hygienists are specifically trained in conservative, non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease. It is our goal to promote total body wellness through oral health.

How Gum Disease Begins

Gum disease begins when sticky, bacteria-producing plaque builds up at the gum line. The plaque hardens into calculus or tarter, and this hard substance in combination with the bacteria create infection at the gum line. Bacteria invade and break the bond between teeth and gums. They create periodontal pockets where this seal is broken, and in the warm, wet, dark pockets, they grow rapidly. Without treatment, gum disease will rapidly spread, causing infection, swelling, tenderness, increased potential for diseases, and, ultimately, tooth and bone loss.

Treating Gum Disease

Caught early, like in a checkup or cleaning, gum disease is treatable with non-surgical therapy. Because we value your comfort and the modern marvels of dental technology, we use a soft tissue laser for debridement. The thread-thin laser comfortably and immediately removes bacteria, plaque, and tartar from periodontal pockets. In some cases, no anesthesia is necessary. Laser periodontal treatment promotes fast healing for quick reattachment of gum tissue to teeth.

Maintaining Healthy Gums

After gum disease therapy, your hygienist will place you on a maintenance schedule. At your visits, we’ll record data about the depth of your periodontal pockets so that we can track treatment progress. The hygienist will recommend daily oral homecare tips to improve your recovery and deter the potential for recurrence. If you have any questions at any time, please talk with your hygienist or call our Aberdeen, NC dental office. We are always here to help you with oral healthcare.
